Dr. Oswaldo Ponce, M.D. is AMC’s Chief of Sports Medicine and Orthopedics.
He specializes in arthroscopic surgery and the treatment of sports-related injuries in shoulder, elbow, knee, ankles and foot, as well as joint replacements. He keeps a special interest in ‘Throwing Athletes’ (baseball players, tennis, basketball, volleyball), and he is also dedicated to the treatment of knee injuries in sports such as football, contact sports and direct or indirect injury involving joint anatomic knee structures like cruciate ligaments, meniscus or joint cartilage.
Dr. Ponce completed his Sports Medicine fellowship at the distinguished American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, USA. As an Andrews Clinic fellow, Dr. Ponce worked side-by-side with renowned orthopedic surgeons Dr. James Andrews, Dr. William Clancy, Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, and Dr. Lyle Cain Jr. He also worked with Dr. Glenn Fleising, head of biomechanical research. Dr. Ponce is the only Hispanic-American – and international – Doctor of Medicine to complete this fellowship.
Dr. Ponce works in conjunction with Dr. Jeffrey Dugas from the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in the surgical treatment of injuries to the joint cartilage of the knee and meniscus transplant. Dr. Ponce is well-known and has been in several programs and interviews talking about the elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery or Tommy John surgery, common among throwing athletes such as baseball players.
The fellowship provided Dr. Ponce with intensive exposure to all aspects of non-operative and operative musculoskeletal patient care. His team physician experience during his fellowship included coverage of Birmingham Barons AA baseball team (White Sox Organization), and other regional sports teams from college and high schools.
Dr. Ponce has been consultant physician for MLB academies including Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, and Toronto Blue Jays organizations.
Furthermore, he has assisted national and international sports personalities. Dr. Ponce has published several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his research at numerous national and regional conferences. Dr. Ponce has received a number of awards related to his academic pursuits.
Dr. Ponce is an International member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), The American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society (ASMFS), The Latin American Orthopedic and Traumatology Surgery Society (S.L.A.O.T), The Latin American Society of Arthroscopy, Knee and Sports Medicine (S.L.A.R.D).
Dr. Ponce enjoys watching and playing tennis and baseball, and practicing scuba diving.
